Toslink cables were first created by Toshiba to be used as an optical cable to connect their CD players to receivers and audio outputs. Toslink is similar to the coaxial cable but is composed of fiber optics and does not use electrical signals. The toslink cables are also very similar to EIAJ optical and S/PDIF signals except for the fact that they use energy pulses or transmitting light instead of audio binary code. The audio optical digital transmission uses and LED light to broadcast the audio signal, which does lead to a problem using fiber optic cables. This is the leading cause to the length in toslink cables being limited to 5 – 10 meters.
